When it comes to creating a home that truly embodies its surroundings, interior designer Rebecca Hughes has a unique talent. Her recent project, Old Oaks Hall, a Georgian country estate in Norfolk, is a testament to her ability to capture the essence of a place and translate it into a captivating living space.
A Calming Retreat
From the very beginning, Hughes recognized the innate tranquility of this property. The architectural charm, with its exposed timber beams and sash windows, provided a perfect canvas for her vision. The challenge was to enhance this peaceful atmosphere while catering to the owners' desire for a warm, inviting space that blended seamlessly with nature.
Bringing the Outdoors In
Hughes' design approach was inspired by the estate's diverse landscapes, from formal gardens to wild meadows. She aimed to create a sense of discovery within the interiors, reflecting the unexpected surprises one might find outdoors. Earthy greens and soft blues, reminiscent of the countryside, were chosen to evoke a sense of calm, while richly layered fabrics and natural textures added depth and interest.
A Space for Conversation and Relaxation
The kitchen, designed as a conversational hub, is a prime example of Hughes' ability to merge practicality with elegance. The project continues with the conversion of a listed livestock barn into a unique entertainment space, combining a tech-filled games room and an outdoor kitchen. With further plans to refresh a pool house and work on another property opposite, Hughes' vision for this estate is far from complete.
In my opinion, Hughes' work at Old Oaks Hall is a masterclass in interior design, where the essence of a place is captured and celebrated. It's a space that invites you to relax, discover, and connect with the beauty of the countryside, both inside and out.
